28 Mar 2024

In January 2024, the President and Vice-Chancellor presented Dr Eric Li with the University’s Medal of Honour at a special ceremony in Hong Kong.

Nancy and Eric

Eric was the first President of the Hong Kong Foundation for the University of Manchester (HKFUM), leading the Foundation’s work from its inception in 2011 until 2021. As President, Eric led the University’s work to create a strong, successful Manchester alumni community in Hong Kong, drawing on his own extensive network of friends and professional acquaintances to bring them into the University fold. The Foundation works with the University to increase philanthropic contributions from its global community and many of the people engaged by Eric have gone on to become major supporters of Manchester.

Eric, who graduated from the University with a BA in Economics in 1975, has held positions in almost every facet of public life in Hong Kong, from both the political and professional industries. These achievements led to his recognition by the Victoria University with an Honorary Doctorate of Laws (LLD) in 2001. As well as his role with the Hong Kong Foundation, Eric also served on the University’s Global Leadership Board.

Eric responded to this honour by saying: "The University of Manchester is a globally renowned institution of higher education. I am honoured to be its alumni and now immensely proud to receive its Medal of Honour as an overseas student given the opportunity to contribute to the University’s momentous progress."
