Manchester Minute Microlectures (M-cubed) online - and live

07 May 2013

Watch researchers explain an aspect of their work in one minute on video - and come along to the next live event on 16 May (7pm) at The Manchester Museum.

Researchers from the Faculties of Medical and Human Sciences and Life Sciences have shared their expertise on a ‘science soapbox’ and given public microlectures about their work.

The M-cubed project (Manchester Minute Microlectures) invites researchers to explain an aspect of their work in just a minute. The project builds upon a successful model pioneered by American universities and The University of Manchester is now introducing it to the UK. Researchers give their microlecture in a public space and it is filmed so people can also watch the short talks online.

One of the organisers, Dr Sue Astley, from the Institute of Population Health, says: “It’s a real challenge to have only one minute and to keep your talk simple, but it’s all about sparking the public’s interest, sharing your enthusiasm and explaining why your research makes a difference.”

M-cubed is funded by the Wellcome Trust and Nowgen is one of the organisers, so these talks are all on biomedical themes, but it is hoped to develop a more diverse collection of films in the future.

The next M-cubed event is being held at Manchester Museum on 16 May at 7pm, as part of an ‘After Hours’ event, which everyone is welcome to attend.
