Funny for money: Red Nose Day antics on campus

21 Mar 2013

Colleagues from around the University went into a cake-baking, costume-wearing, sponge-flinging frenzy last Friday to raise funds for Comic Relief.

The range of activities which took place across campus was as varied as the costumes worn by the ladies from IT Services Admin in the Kilburn Building, who dressed up as fundraising superheroes in order to ‘rescue’ a considerable amount of donations.

Directors from Estates and Facilities must have wished they had superhuman powers when they found themselves in the stocks being pelted with wet sponges on a chilly day: joining in with the Directorate Harlem Shake would have warmed them up in no time (see the video below).

The Village People, a chav and an '80s throwback were all spotted at the Directorate of Research and Business Engagement Support Services, whilst other staff members were seen abseiling down University Place.

Gangnam-style dancing and penny-throwing in the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences, a FastNet Netball Tournament organised by Sport Manchester, a book sale, tombola and ‘guess the dog’s name’ competition (‘Munch’) from the School of Materials Student Support Office were just some of the wonderfully whacky events enthusiastically supported throughout the day.

But the most popular events by far were the bake-offs and home-made cake sales that took place across campus, declaring war on all diets! With cream egg chocolate brownies on sale in the Mansfield Cooper Building, delectable edibles available in the Faculty of Life Sciences, the Directorate of HR and the School of Law, and enough bake-off competitions to make Mary Berry dizzy, you couldn’t throw a stick on campus without hitting a Victoria sponge!

Heartfelt thanks and congratulations to everyone who organised, contributed, donated, joined in, dressed up, dressed down, danced, played, got wet, baked and bought. The money you have raised will save lives.

Didn't they do well?
