IT Know-How: Get connected to Eduroam

09 Jan 2013

Tips to help you get the most out of IT Services.

Eduroam is one of the University’s wireless networks. The network is an international system that allows someone with credentials from one University to login securely at another University which supports eduroam (e.g. The University of Lancaster and UCL). Once a device is configured it will automatically connect to eduroam whenever and wherever the network is available.

This network is particularly suitable for mobile and tablet users since there is no need to login each time. To configure your phone or tablet, just follow the quick and easy instructions below:

Android

  • Go to Wireless & Networks and ensure wireless is on.
  • Select eduroam from Wi-Fi settings.
  • If prompted, enter ‘PEAP’ under ‘EAP’ or security method.
  • Enter your IT account details in the format: centralusername@manchester.ac.uk (e.g. mwptrjklk2@manchester.ac.uk).

Apple

Blackberry

  • Go to Manage Connections and set up a Wi-Fi Network.
  • Manually add the network by typing ‘eduroam’.
  • If prompted, enter ‘PEAP’ under ‘EAP’ or security method.
  • For Blackberry version 5, make sure sure Disable Server Certificate Validation is selected.
  • Enter your IT account details in the format: centralusername@manchester.ac.uk (e.g. mwptrjklk2@manchester.ac.uk).
  • Click Save
