Stargazing returns

Dara and the BBC team back to broadcast live from Jodrell Bank

Stargazing 2012

Stargazing LIVE – the BBC’s hugely-popular space exploration show broadcast live from the University’s iconic Jodrell Bank – returns to our screens on January 8, 9 and 10.

Hosted by our own Professor Brian Cox and comedian Dara O Briain, the astronomy extravaganza – which aims to encourage everyone from the complete beginner to the enthusiastic amateur to make the most of the night sky – is now in its third year.

Last year it attracted more than 10 million viewers across three nights.

This year, Brian, Dara and the team will join the hunt to find life on Mars, giving the audience the opportunity to explore an uncharted area of the red planet themselves from the comfort of their own homes. Liz Bonnin will be live with the Curiosity Rover team at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, while Mark Thompson will be showing us how to view Jupiter’s moons.

We will also learn how to see the history of the universe by looking up at the night sky above our heads, visit NASA’s newest and greatest space telescope and discover what dangers face us and our planet as we hurtle through space – namely, the asteroids and comets spinning close to earth next year.

  • Stargazing LIVE will be broadcast on BBC 2 at 8pm on January 8, 9 and 10.
