Supporting your public engagement plans

An exciting training opportunity will bring together people from different science disciplines and support them as they develop their public engagement plans.

This programme is designed for people who are new to public engagement and it offers lots of practical advice and links you with an experienced mentor.

The first workshop in this programme will be held on 4 December (9.30am - 2pm).

Course details

On this practical course you will:

  • Explore what makes great public engagement.
  • Learn how to engage effectively with different audiences.
  • Try out and evaluate a range of hands-on activities that have been used in the past.
  • Explore and generate new ideas for public engagement activities.
  • Devise interactive activities that will help you explain your research.
  • Collaborate with researchers from across a range of science and engineering disciplines.
  • Identify potential opportunities at which to showcase different types of activities. 

But we don't just want to inspire you with great ideas. We want help you develop those ideas into concrete plans! This course is all about developing confidence, networks, and experience in public engagement. 

So by the end of the day, you will form teams to further work up one of the ideas to pitch at the follow-up Dragon's Den event in January. Winning ideas will be given funds up to the value of £150.

You will also be assigned an experienced public engagement mentor who will offer your team advice and support to help bring your idea to fruition.

The workshop is a cross-faculty initiative - open to the research community in the Faculty of Life Sciences, the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
