Training courses in computational research

Introductory and intermediate level courses for staff and PGRs: February-March 2012

IT Services is running a series of courses aimed at staff and postgraduates (PGRs) undertaking or interested in computational research.  The courses are staged to lead you from understanding basic principles such as accessing high performance computing facilities to programming using parallel languages/extensions. Understanding the masses of data we collect is also covered via a selection of visualization courses.

Introductory Courses

These require no prior knowledge other than how to use a modern PC:

  • Introduction to Research Computing Thursday 9 February (half day)
  • Programming Techniques for Research Computing Thursday 23 February
  • Introduction to Scientific Visualization Thursday 1 March

Intermediate Courses

These generally require some knowledge of FORTRAN or C, and UNIX or Linux:

  • Parallel Computing using the Message Passing Interface MPI Wednesday 29 February
  • High Throughput Computing using Condor Thursday 8 March
  • Shared Memory & Multicore Programming with OpenMP Tuesday 13 March
  • Introduction to OpenCL Tuesday 27 March
