New Dean for EPS

Professor Colin Bailey has been appointed Vice-President and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering & Physical Sciences at The University of Manchester.

Colin, who secured the post against strong international competition, said: “I am delighted to be Vice President and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. The Faculty is already one of the strongest engineering and physical sciences faculties in the world, which can be attributed to the talent, commitment, and enthusiasm of existing staff, together with the investment in excellent facilities.”

He added: “I look forward to working closely with colleagues across the University to further enhance the Faculty’s international standing, making it the location of choice for the very best students, leading scholars, research investment, and professional support staff.”

Colin originally joined UMIST in 2002 as Professor of Structural Engineering, and following the merger with the Victoria University of Manchester in 2004, he became Head of Dynamics, Structures and Design in the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering.

In September 2007 he was appointed Head of School, responsible for a budget of £24.2M and line-manager for 79 academic staff, 84 support staff and 63 research staff.  In May 2009 he took up the position of Acting Vice-President and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. 

Colin from Timperley, is married with three children. Prior to joining the University, Colin worked in industry for five different organisations involved in the research, development and design of various aspects of construction. He is author of 98 research papers and books and is considered a leading expert in the fire design of structures.  Colin has an undergraduate degree in Civil and Structural Engineering and a PhD from Sheffield.
