Welcome to The Manchester Museum's August ebulletin for adults.

Artist Ansuman Biswas has nearly completed his hermitage in the Museum. This month also sees the launch of The Evolutionist, our Darwin extravaganza. Opening with a Big Saturday fun day on 8 August, it will feature exhibitions and activities relating to Darwin and his work. Find out more below.

The Manchester Museum is open daily:

  • Tuesday-Saturday: 10am-5pm
  • Sunday, Monday and Bank Holidays: 11am-4pm

Manchester Hermit up for destruction!

Artist Ansuman Biswas has almost completed his hermitage in the Museum. He will be coming out of the tower on Wednesday 5 August. To mark this, the Museum will be hosting a family yoga session at 12.15pm and mass meditation at 1pm on Wednesday 5 August.

Having studied 40 objects whilst in the tower, Ansuman is now offering himself as the final object. He is prepared to go wherever the highest bidder asks and do any duties for 24 hours. If you would like to take him for 24 hours on 5 August, please add your suggestion to:

The Evolutionist: A Darwin Extravaganza

Who was Charles Darwin and what did he do? Why should we be interested? All will be revealed during this extravaganza of exhibitions and events for visitors of all ages and interests. Find out about Charles Darwin's life and work, the theory of evolution and science since Charles Darwin. Explore how science works, the difference between faith and fact, and how Darwin's work has been used and abused.

Big Saturday: Nature Discovery
Saturday 8 August, 11am-4pm

Join in this day of adventure and discovery. Find out about Charles Darwin, who he was and what he did. Explore the galleries and meet some of the animals he saw on his Voyage of the Beagle. Follow guided tours and explore nature with Museum experts. Click here to find out more.

Nature Discovery
From 8 August 2009

Explore nature and evolution in Nature Discovery, a new permanent activity area for younger visitors and their families. Admire and handle objects and get hands-on in an environment designed for fun, family learning and exploration.

In Darwin's Footsteps
5 September 2009-31 January 2010

A photographic installation of South American landscapes and wildlife which Darwin saw on his travels, by local photographer Ben Hall.

Charles Darwin: Evolution of a Scientist
3 October 2009-30 August 2010

Discover who Charles Darwin was and the impact of his work in our temporary exhibition, Charles Darwin: Evolution of a Scientist, showcasing fantastic objects - some collected by Darwin himself - and illustrated in a graphic novel style.

Creative Tourist Launch
