Two Cities Boat Race Day - Saturday 12 May

08 May 2007

A FREE day out for all the family

Come down to Salford Quays this Saturday 12 May for an exciting day out for all the family! Apart from the waterborne entertainment there will be face-painting, music, university cheerleaders and lots to eat and drink.

In the morning, from 10 am, enjoy all the colour and excitement of Dragon Boat racing, as teams of students, staff from both The Universities of Manchester and Salford and several corporate teams battle it out outside the Lowry Centre.  Each team has sixteen rowers with a drummer marking time and word has it that this year there has been a lot of training behind the scenes.  One of the corporate teams is from insurance company "Sheilas' Wheels", who will have their bright pink Mercury Monterey on the quayside to add to the fun of the day.  The afternoon is the time to see the real athletes in a seven race regatta, as student rowers from both universities take part in an annual battle in which Manchester usually takes the honours - but will we this time?  The day culminates at around 4.30pm with the fabulous men's eights sprinting together toward the finishing line at the Lowry bridge.

So come and be a part of this great, free annual event, supported by Granada TV and the Manchester Evening News, and cheer on Manchester's students to a successful finish.  Full details are in the race programme on sale at the Quays on Saturday.
