2016: a good year to run 2016 miles and raise £2,016

As if managing the Engineering and Physical Sciences’ operational financial affairs is not enough, EPS’s Finance Operations Manager, John Halliwell, has set himself the goal of running 2016 miles in 2016 to raise £2,016 for the charity Addaction

Founded in 1967, this small charity supports people (young and old alike) in their bid to change their behaviours in relation to drugs, alcohol, or other areas impacting their mental health and wellbeing. It aims to assist individuals enhance their lives in previously unimagined ways.

John’s 2016 mile challenge starts in April with the Brighton Marathon, although fundraising began earlier in the year. Only last month John organised a charity race night at the Cheadle Sports Club. He, along with his Brighton Marathon Team, raised £1,340.20 from the evening’s activities.

Thanks to the generosity of many, John impressively reached his target of £2,016 by February. Moreover, not only did he become Addaction’s highest fundraiser that month, he was also in the top 1% of 471,898 fundraisers on Just Giving. To date, he has raised £2,351.47.

Join will continue his mileage challenge with events including, the Wilmslow Half Marathon, the Palma Half Marathon, and the Manchester 10k to name but a few. John’s journey will end on New Year’s Eve with a three mile Park Run in South Manchester.

On 22 May, John will be one of approximately 1,100 staff and students from the University of Manchester who will be running in the Manchester 10k.
