HR catches them young at primary school careers fair

24 Aug 2015

In July, Steve Grant (Assistant Director of HR), Fiona Coll and Stephen Johnston (HR Partners in FLS) and Dan Sutcliffe (Employment and Skills Manager at The Works) attended a Careers Fair at St Mary’s Primary School in Moss Side

Around 240 children aged 7-11 (and one or two as young as 5!) attended and quizzed the trio on all aspects of working at the University and in Human Resources.

Whilst the aim of the day was to give the youngsters an insight to the world of work, the colleagues who attended were amazed by the children’s ambition, knowledge and confidence. One nine year old insisted she would be going to Oxford University because "that’s where David Cameron went" and she clearly had her sights set on the country’s top job, while another wanted to be a microbiologist.

One little girl said that both her older sister and her mum work at Chancellors and she was fully conversant with what a university is! Given that St. Mary’s serves a community which suffers from high levels of unemployment and the associated social issues, it’s clear that there is a lot of future talent in Moss Side and the surrounding communities. Hopefully the afternoon that colleagues spent with the children will have made a small contribution to helping them realise their ambitions.
