23 Mar 2015

A new series of videos about some of the greatest academic minds, educational innovators and cultural icons who have defined the University

The story of The University of Manchester is defined by some of the greatest academic minds, educational innovators and cultural icons. In a new series of videos, staff from the University tell us which of these figures are their heritage heroes, explaining their achievements and why they resonate today.

John Owens (1790–1846) was a cotton merchant, philanthropist, and founder of Owens College, one of the predecessors of The University of Manchester.

Dr James Hopkins, University Historian and Heritage Manager, tells us why Owens is his University of Manchester heritage hero.
