This introductory course is aimed at team leaders, supervisors and managers who are relatively unfamiliar with the topics of strategy and change management/leadership.

Organisational success depends upon effective strategic thinking and change management.  This course will provide an introduction to, and overview of, both topics and cover the following areas:

• The use of basic strategic thinking techniques such as PESTLE and SWOT analyses

• Theories of strategy formulation – planned and emergent; corporate and ‘business’

•The strategic approach in the university

• Change theories/models – Lewin and Kotter

• Translating change management theories into practice e.g. project planning, process improvement

• Peoples’ emotional reaction to change and the politics of change

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

• Use one strategic thinking/planning technique

• Explain important links between strategy and managing/leading change

• Identify strengths and weaknesses in strategic/change management approaches e.g. as pertains in the University
