Do you already give regularly to charity?

08 Dec 2014

Did you know that your charity could benefit more if you donate through the University's new Workplace Giving Scheme - and all without your giving a extra penny?

Workplace Giving

If you already give to a charity regularly via direct debit and tick the Gift Aid box, your charity will only be able to claim back the tax at the 20% standard rate and there will be a cost to them in time and rseources. In fact, some charities do not reclaim the tax on Gift Aid donations because they simply cannot afford to do so.

On the other hand, if you give £10 from your pay each month, your charity will automatically receive:

  • £12.50 if you are a 20% tax payer
  • £16.66 if you are a 40% tax payer
  • £18.18 if you are a 45% tax payer

For a higher rate tax payer, this is the only method by which the charity can receive the full taxable amount.

Changing over to Workplace Giving is simple and quick

If you decide that your charity will benefit from receiving your donation via your pay and wish to change your method of giving, simply sign up by one of the following methods:

  • Online via Workplace Giving
  • Download the mobile app "Workplace Giving UK" in the App Store or in Google Play
  • Call HR Services 0161 27 54499 and ask for a Workplace Giving application form

You’ll just need to give the following information:

  • Your charity details
  • The amount you wish to give
  • Your basic employer/personal details

Workplace Giving UK will then set this up from the next available payroll cut-off date. Once your first deduction has appeared on your payslip, you can then cancel your direct debit with your bank.

This will mean your charity does not miss out on a month’s contributions and also that you will not be charged twice in that month if you cancel the direct debit on your payday. The charity will then recognise this as a changeover and not a cancellation.
