Help develop our local schools – and your skills and experience

Join our highly successful School Governors Initiative

School governor Rachel Brealey

As part of our widening participation and social responsibility strategy at Manchester, we are working to increase the number of University staff and alumni serving as governors in local schools.

Our School Governor Initiative (UMSGI) provides opportunities and support for staff across the University, as well as our alumni community, to become Local Authority or Community Governors.

This not only helps our local community, it helps the staff involved develop their skills and gain experience.

An important part of the University’s agreement with the Office for Fair Access, UMSGI was set up in July 2011.

Since then, we have achieved the largest and fastest growth in governors in the UK and have already surpassed our target to double the number of staff volunteering as governors. We currently have around 250 staff and alumni in our School Governor Network.

Stephanie Lee, Head of Widening Participation and Outreach, says: “We have received extremely positive feedback from senior Council Leaders, Head Teachers and Chairs of boards of governors about the impact having someone from The University of Manchester has had on their school or college.

“We also know from staff who are governors that this role has had a positive impact on their own skills development.”
