Blackboard course lifecycle and deletion of old course units

25 Jun 2014

For the attention of academic staff and Programme Administrators

This year we are fully implementing the course lifecycle for Blackboard courses.  This means that any course units from 2010-11 (pilots) or 2011-12 will be permanently deleted from the system. This is the last step in the full Blackboard 9 course unit lifecycle. Course units will be deleted as follows:

  • 2010-11 (pilots) - 1 August 2014
  • 2011-12 course units - 1 December 2014
The lifecycle is represented in this Bb9 course lifecycle diagram, which is mapped out for the 2013-14 academic year and which will be the model for future years. This is in line with University data retention guidelines.

What do you need to do?

Most staff will not need to take any action.

As you will not have had access to Semester 1 courses since October 2012 or all Year and Semester 2 courses since 15 February 2013, you will typically have already downloaded or copied across any content or student data you needed from these courses prior to those dates.

However, if you have been on secondment or if the course unit hasn’t run for the last two academic years (ie 2012-13 and 2013-14), and you think you need content from such a course unit (ie 2010-11 (pilots) or 2011-12 courses), please get in touch with your elearning team at elearning@manchester.ac.uk as soon as possible, as these courses will be deleted permanently from the system on 1 August and 1 December 2014 respectively.
