The Atrium and Welcome Desk all set for launch

19 Sep 2013

On the spot advice and information for students will be available at two prominent locations in University Place from 23 September onwards.

Atrium

The Welcome Desk

The eye-catching new desk on the ground floor foyer of University Place will be open all year round and will be run by staff from the Student Services Centre.

They will be able to deal with most questions and queries from students. The Student Services Centre’s main base will remain on Burlington Street near the Main Library.

The Atrium

Located on the first floor of University Place, The Atrium is an impressive new space which brings together a whole range of new and existing student advice and support services.

The Atrium will be opening its doors for access to the Careers Service from 23 September, and will be gradually developing and expanding its other services over the coming months.

Staff based there will be able to offer on the spot information, advice and guidance for our students on issues from money and financial advice, exploring careers and employability, to studying abroad and learning about health and wellbeing.

Thanks to quirky interview pods, The Atrium has a variety of spaces for both confidential and non-confidential conversations. A calendar of events, workshops and the promotion of initiatives to enhance the student experience will also be running throughout the year.

Listening to student feedback

Commenting on the launch of these new and high profile locations, Director for the Student Experience Dr Tim Westlake said: “I am tremendously excited about the opening of The Atrium as the University’s one stop shop for information, advice and guidance for students.  I am absolutely certain that The Atrium deliver tangible improvements to the services we offer to our students and make a real difference to the experience of our students.

“Next time you are in University Place, why not visit The Atrium and see what we have on offer for our students?”

We want to make sure that we’re offering the best quality advice and support for our students in locations which are easy to find – they are the shop window for the great support and guidance services on offer.

“They are another way of demonstrating our commitment to listening to the feedback from our students.”

What’s on offer

The Careers Service

The Careers Service will hold a prominent position in The Atrium with high profile locations on both the ground and first floor. From 23 September, students will have the opportunity to get information, advice and guidance on exploring their career options and improving their employability as well as finding opportunities for graduate jobs, work experience, placements, volunteering and part-time work.

The International Programmes Office (IPO)

Formerly know as Study Abroad, IPO will provide information and support on a wide range of international opportunities for undergraduate students, including studying abroad. Students will have the opportunity to speak with Global Guidance Ambassadors (students who have returned from a period of studying abroad) and book appointments with IPO Advisers.

The Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG)

The IAG team will be launching a new operation at the end of October. The advisers will provide information and guidance on a range of areas of interest to students from managing money, budgeting and finances to exploring health, wellbeing and making the most of opportunities available whilst at University. The IAG will be hosting events and workshops supporting student finance, health and wellbeing throughout the year.
