IT Know How Tip: Does something smell phishy?

23 May 2013

Don’t get caught out.

phishing

Spear phishing is a new form of phishing where bogus emails target individuals at a specific company, seeking unauthorised access to confidential data. The email often appears to come from a reputable source or a known individual. It may also include links to spoof websites which are not associated with the University and ask you to enter personal information. These websites may also contain malicious code which risks infecting your computer with a virus.

The University of Manchester will NEVER send out emails requesting you to ‘verify your account’. Be suspicious of any email asking you to do this and contact the Service Desk if you need advice. The most common phishing sites do not look like the University’s standard login webpage, however don’t get lured into websites which impersonate our login page and look almost identical.
