Tools and Guidance

Line managers play a key role in supporting the wellbeing of their people, and one way to do this is by recognising when a stress risk assessment may be needed. An individual stress risk assessment is most appropriate when a team member is showing signs of work-related stress, has raised concerns about their wellbeing, or is returning to work after a period of stress-related absence. This structured approach helps identify the specific pressures affecting that individual and highlights practical steps that can be taken to reduce risks and provide tailored support.

At times, however, stress can affect more than one person. If there are signs of widespread challenges such as high workloads, low morale, or repeated concerns being raised by several team members, a team wellbeing and stress risk assessment can provide valuable insights. By assessing the work environment collectively, managers can identify common stressors and develop solutions that benefit the whole team, such as improving communication, adjusting workloads, or enhancing support.

Both individual and team stress risk assessments not only support an employer’s legal duty of care but also contribute to a healthier, more engaged and supportive workplace culture. They demonstrate that managers are proactive in supporting wellbeing, reducing absence, and fostering an environment where colleagues feel valued and able to perform at their best.
