University External Examiner – Role description

Main duties

To contribute to the University’s regular review and analysis of student outcomes data, and associated policy and practice on assessment, providing an external perspective informed by significant senior experience of academic quality and standards within the HE sector.

This will include:

  • Consideration and comment on student outcomes data and related reports, linked to Annual Performance Review cycles, to support the University in its analysis of the data and identification of any appropriate actions
  • Review and endorsement of the University’s Degree Outcomes Statement (as required by the UK Standing Committee for Quality Assurance). The published Statement will normally be updated annually to reflect the latest institutional data: https://www.staffnet.manchester.ac.uk/tlso/quality/degree-outcomes-statement/
  • Contributing to the ongoing review and development of assessment policy and practice at the University
  • Considering decisions of the University Examination Board, where it is convened in the event of the application of the Procedure to Protect the Interests of Students and PGRs in Exceptional Circumstances: https://documents.manchester.ac.uk/DocuInfo.aspx?DocID=35659
  • Meeting with the Vice–President (Teaching, Learning and Students) and members of the Teaching & Learning Strategy Group, once per academic year
  • Producing an annual report, summarising the post-holder’s engagement with the University, commenting upon the University’s approach to academic standards and degree outcomes, and making recommendations as appropriate for the University to consider to further develop and enhance its work in this area. This report will form part of the University’s academic assurance process.
