Changes to the Student Experience Programme
This website is no longer active as the Student Experience Programme transitions to a series of projects.
The Student Experience Programme is a long-standing programme which has delivered significant change in new technologies and structures that deliver benefits to students. For example, the programme has recently relaunched the My Manchester portal to students providing valuable self-serve features such as My Library, My Financials and My Bank.
The programme is transitioning to a number of smaller, agile and active projects which will continue to improve the student experience into 2025 and beyond.

Mitigating Circumstances and Extensions
The Mitigating Circumstances and Extensions (MC&E) project is a key initiative aimed at standardising processes across the University to ensure a consistent approach to managing mitigating circumstances and coursework extensions.
This project involves the implementation of new technology (ServiceNow) for the management, tracking and recording MC&E applications and outcomes. This technology will be based on the principles set out in the 2023 Policy on Mitigating Circumstances and Extensions., and will remove reliance on spreadsheets, reduce manual administration and provide an efficient and effective case management solution across all schools.
The project continues to gather insight and engage both students, business and technical stakeholders towards planned project release for full implementation for academic year 2026/27.
Our vision:
The MC&E project aims to deliver a secure and efficient solution for managing mitigating circumstances and extension applications. This project will greatly enhance the student experience by implementing a consistent and streamlined MC&E process, ensuring a fairer and more efficient service for all taught students.
What the MC&E project will deliver:
- Standardisation: Develop a consistent, standardised, and GDPR-compliant business process and technical solution for submitting and processing mitigating circumstances applications and coursework extension requests.
- Increased Efficiencies: Ensure students encounter an enhanced and efficient experience with smart content forms, reducing manual administrative tasks.
- Timely Processing: Enable staff to receive and process requests in a timely manner, removing single points of failure.
- Improved Turnaround: Improve both student and staff experiences by reducing turnaround and response times.
- Auditable Records: Provide an auditable account of MC&E applications and their outcomes and robust cross-organisational management information to enable targeted student support provision.

Student Hubs
eProg Project
eProg is an application which has been developed in-house to manage postgraduate research student progression.
The first phase of the project delivers functionality within eProg to manage thesis submission to enable us to decommission eThesis (the current thesis submission portal)which is no longer supported. To address this, eProg will be enhanced to include thesis management features and capabilities, and existing data will be migrated from eThesis to eProg.
Future phases of the eProg Project will continue to improve eProg’s functionality and sustainability.

Assessment and Progression
Our vision is to create an integrated and efficient Assessment & Progression (A&P) system that enhances the experiences of all university stakeholders.
For students, it will provide clear and timely information regarding their academic journey.
For staff, we simplify processes that reduce manual workloads, fostering collaboration and efficiency. Academics benefit from seamless integration of grading systems, allowing them to focus on teaching and providing effective academic advice.
Our vision aims to create a system that will:
- Empower students with clarity that supports their academic journeys.
- Ease colleague workload by simplifying the processes and reducing manual workloads, allowing academics to focus on teaching and providing effective advice.
- Ensure the University gains from a system that works well for colleagues and students.
What the Assessment and Progression project will deliver:
- Increased Efficiency by reducing manual processes with a standardised approach.
- Improved Functionality that provides quality data and reduces errors.
- Increased Staff Well-being leading to reduced stress and less overtime.
- Increased Student Satisfaction with consistent access to grading information and the ability to take appropriate actions.
The proposed solution:
- An IT system which better supports the A&P process, with the necessary functions under ‘Activity management’ and ‘Progression and Degree Award’
- Integrations with other systems to make the ‘product’ effective
- Consistent business processes which enable A&P operations to run efficiently
