All three sites are depicted on the campus guide. Arthur Lewis Building is number 36, Ellen Wilkinson is number 77 and Humanities Bridgeford Street is building number 35. SEED colleagues are encouraged to visit, and work in all sites.
General information
Car parking
There are a number of car parks situated close to SEED's three buildings.
New members of staff can apply for a car park permit. For further information, see car parking at the University.
Access
All three buildings are open from 8.00am to 6.00pm weekdays. At all other times, the buildings can be accessed via the main entrance doors using your University staff card.
To access the building out of hours each member of staff will need their card to be validated. All staff and PGR students who work outside the hours of 7.00am and 6.00pm should ensure they sign in and record their name, time of arrival and departure in the 'out of hours' log on the reception desk of each building.
Queries relating to access or keys (see section below for how to acquire a key to your office) should be directed to SEEDSchoolOffice@manchester.ac.uk.
Bicycles
Secure bicycle shelters are available for cyclists on a first come, first served basis. The shelters are located on Bridgeford Street, Brunswick Street and in the Booth Street West multi-storey car park.
Apply to the Car Park Permit Office (Beyer Building G.002) for access which will be provided via your staff card. The office is open between the hours of 9.45am and 1pm.

Download detailed guidance and a list of school meeting / teaching rooms in the Arthur Lewis Building and Humanities Bridgeford Street Buildings. You can also download detailed guidance for Ellen Wilkinson Commons, including how to book the space for an event.
NB: All *teaching* bookings should be made through your programme administrators, not as direct bookings. This is so that the bookings appear in student timetables.
Recycling
Staff have the opportunity to recycle a number of materials as detailed below:
Waste and Recycling Stations are located in each of the communal or “Oasis” areas that are located at the end of each of floor. Additional recycling stations are located on the ground floor. These are colour coded and marked up so that waste can be separated into different waste streams such as plastic bottles, cans, etc. to allow them to be recycled.
As well as being encouraged to separate out waste, staff should continue to use the office paper recycling scheme that has been in place throughout the University for a number of years. This already means that the University recycles around 375 tonnes of waste office paper each year. A paper recycling container will be located at key points on each floor and close to photocopiers, etc. to maximize usage. Confidential paper waste containers can also be found near all photocopiers.
Recycling other waste types:
- Due to current contractual arrangements it is only possible to recycle plastic bottles. Other plastic items will have to be placed in the general waste. If you are able, please squash your plastic bottles and then secure the lid before depositing them.
- A separate collection of glass bottles has not been included due to health and safety issues and the fact that most beverage containers are now made of plastic. However, staff are encouraged to use the glass bottle banks situated around the campus. Currently the nearest glass bottle bank is alongside the Humanities Building, Bridgeford Street. There is one ‘mixed glass’ bank at this location for all colours of glass.
- Any cardboard can be collected separately by House Services Staff. This is then collected by Campus Cleansing from the building on a daily basis and sent for recycling.
- Any redundant IT related electronic or redundant electrical equipment can be disposed of through IT Services in the Kilburn building. This is then re-used or refurbished where possible through a contractor. Contact IT Services on extension 65544.
- Used toner cartridges and inkjet refills should be packaged securely and left beside the recycling bins in any building.
- Other electrical items can be collected by Campus Cleansing (24hr answer-phone on extension 52246).
- Household type/alkaline batteries (AA, AAA etc), can be disposed of in collection boxes situated at ground floor receptions of ALB/EWB (block C)/HBS. Lead acid, nickel cadmium, and batteries containing mercury are however hazardous and need to be disposed of separately. For information on the disposal of batteries contact Simon Atkinson, Waste Coordinator, Directorate of Estates (tel: 0161 306 5963, mobile: 07917 245148, simon.atkinson@manchester.ac.uk)
- Fluorescent tubes and sodium lamps are now classified as hazardous waste. Contact Operations and Maintenance (helpdesk extension 52424) to arrange removal, as procedures are already in place for the correct disposal of these items.
More information about waste/recycling can be found here (Directorate of Estates), including an A-Z list of items that can currently be recycled at the University.

You are encouraged to lock purses, wallets, laptops and mobile phones away in lockers or pedestals which have been provided for you, and when not in your office to lock your office door. In the case of emergency, call security on extension 52728/69966.

To update your staff card, or if you are a new member of staff who needs their card validating for swipe access, send details of your name and card number to accesscontrol@manchester.ac.uk. For replacement staff cards, contact HRServices@manchester.ac.uk or visit HR services (2nd floor, Simon Building).
First Aid

- A list of current First Aiders and their locations
- Accident/Incident/Ill-health report form
University Security staff are all trained in First Aid and can be contacted on the number on the back of your staff/student card (0161 306 9966).
Walls and glass panels
Please do not stick anything to wall surfaces, use the notice boards. If you have framed pictures etc that you want to hang on your walls, please contact the Estates Helpdesk.
Please do not stick anything on the glass panels to the side of your office door, it will damage it and it is very expensive to replace. We are required by Health and Safety to maintain vision panels so that in the event of a fire, fire marshals and fire fighters can easily see if there is anyone trapped inside the office.
