Three Faculty colleagues on the Humanities New Academics Programme (HNAP) have been commended by Fiona Devine for delivering a high standard of academic practice.
The Humanities New Academics Programme (HNAP) is a professional development programme for academics who join the Faculty, providing the opportunity for them to deepen and broaden the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in an academic career.
Each academic on the programme needs to complete an evidence-based review and enhancement of an aspect of their education practice and undertake peer learning by both being observed teaching and observing another colleague while teaching.
The Dean’s commendation identifies outstanding practice, highlighting excellent examples of enhancement and/or reflection which will lead to improvements in teaching and the student experience.
This year, Fiona has commended three colleagues for high standards of academic practice and innovation:
- Hanain Brohi (SALC): Curriculum enhancement using a social justice framework for inclusive education
- Karen Healey (SEED): Developing an assessment rubric
- Kerrie Hughes-Jones (SEED): Enhancing mentor training to effectively support pre-service primary school teachers
Karen reflected on receiving the Dean’s commendation, saying: “It was an honour and, for me, recognition that my practice has and will continue to grow through engagement with others – colleagues, students and the research community.
“As an academic engaged in teaching, my focus is on reflective practice as part of a community, to create a student experience that goes beyond delivery of content to one that brings about independence and co-creation of learning opportunities.”
Kerrie said: “Receiving the Dean’s commendation means a great deal to me, as it reflects the care and passion I bring to my work with students.
“I’m deeply committed to creating welcoming, supportive learning spaces where students feel seen, valued, and confident. Through my practice, I hope to continue enhancing the student experience by nurturing connection, growth, and a genuine love of learning.”
