Colleague communications

Good internal communication plays an essential part in making our colleagues feel involved, engaged and valued.

The Internal Communications and Engagement team provide advice and guidance on colleague communication with the aim to make communications simpler, more effective and better coordinated.

We use a business partnering approach and work closely with leadership teams to understand priorities, offer expert advice, plan communications activity and support delivery where it adds most value.

We aim to ensure that:

  • communications help build a shared sense of direction, identity and purpose
  • engagement is twoway, not just about sharing information
  • our communications activity is strategic, targeted and inclusive
  • colleagues at all levels receive clear, consistent messages

Our channels

We manage a variety of communications and engagement channels that include:

  • StaffNet – colleague intranet
  • From Manchester, for you – weekly all-colleague newsletter
  • Viewpoint – blog where senior leaders from across our University can share their thoughts and insights on a range of topics
  • Managers Need to know – monthly newsletter for line managers
  • Research and impact at Manchester – bi-monthly newsletter for our research community
  • Teaching, learning and students newsletter – monthly newsletter for our teaching, learning and students colleagues

We also look after colleague wide engagement events for senior leaders such as our monthly all-colleague townhalls and Professional services open meetings.

Internal communications toolkit

We are committed to developing colleagues’ communication skills. To enable us to do this, we have developed our internal communications toolkit.

In the first instance, we may suggest you look through our toolkit to help you plan your communications. The toolkit features an introduction to communication planning, a guide to creating an effective communications plan and a communications plan template.
