Frog Friday Live from Manchester Museum

21 Apr 2020

Ever wondered how long frogs live for? How many species of frogs exist? What frogs eat? How to build a frog habitat? And more…

Frog Friday

Tune into Periscope @mcrmuseum every Friday at 1pm where all of your frog questions will be answered live from the Museum’s Vivarium.

Like many museums across the world, Manchester Museum is currently closed due to the Covid-19 crisis. However, Frog Friday is part of a wider programme of activity linked to Manchester Museum in Quarantine, which aims to open up the museum online, continuing access to exhibitions, learning resources and volunteering opportunities, for all ages.

Manchester Museum in Quarantine is a carefully curated mobile site containing engaging digital resources to help entertain, educate and spark joy and wonder until the museum reopens. Frog Friday Live is part of the home-schooling and families strand of work. It will invite viewers into the popular and much loved Vivarium to talk all things frog related whilst introducing people to the different frogs living at the museum.

The Museum's Vivarium is committed to the conservation of reptiles and amphibians and is particularly notable for its large collection of Costa Rican frogs. The museum has been responsible for establishing important captive breeding programmes for some of the Costa Rica’s most critically endangered species, such as the Lemur Leaf frog. Frog Friday will raise awareness of these important conservation programmes whilst answering people’s frog related questions.

Esme Ward, Director of Manchester Museum said: "Manchester Museum aims to be the most inclusive, imaginative and caring museum you might encounter and Manchester Museum in Quarantine is shaped by this too.

"Frog Friday is a fun way to move our learning programme online and engage people not just locally but across the world. We’re missing conversations, curiosity and questions from our visitors and Frog Friday is a way of continuing that."

  • Frog Friday starts on Friday, 24 April 2020. Submit a question to Frog Friday using #FrogFriday or #MMinQuarantine, or contact us.
