August 2022 TLD Bulletin

1.       Staffing updates

Matthew Makin (Teaching and Learning Assistant), primarily dealing with External Examiner administration, has left TLD to start a new role in the School of Health Sciences. We wish Matthew all the best in his new role.

2.       Scheduling (Timetabling and Examinations)

The 2022/23 timetable was released to Schools on 25th July. This is the first timetable for the university which doesn’t use any of the buildings at North Campus, and instead uses the new MECD site (Engineering Buildings A & B, Oddfellows Hall and James Chadwick). Despite our overall teaching estate being smaller, plus the recent increases in student numbers over the last couple of years, the team were still able to accommodate over 95% of School requests at their first choice of day and time.

Work is currently underway on the August resit examination timetable. This year’s resit period runs from 22nd August to 2nd September. Although resit examinations are relatively small compared to the main exam period, they are no less challenging to organise, and also present some unique challenges such as trying to ensure that noisy building work (which is often scheduled for the summer) is coordinated to avoid any disruption to our students!

Staff may have noticed a couple of days of downtime for Resource Booker. This was caused by a security certificate change and affected a number of universities. John Hornsby in the Scheduling Team worked with IT Services and Scientia to get the problem resolved and the service back on line as quickly as possible and it is now running as normal.
