Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to technologies that can help people create content, analyse information, generate ideas, automate tasks and support decision-making. At The University of Manchester, AI should be used to enhance human expertise and judgement, not replace it, helping colleagues work more efficiently, creatively and confidently.

Our institutional AI tool is Microsoft Copilot, which is available to colleagues and students and should be the first choice for most AI-related activities. Other AI tools may also be available. Colleagues should always consider information security, data protection, ethical use and University guidance when deciding how and when to use AI.

Using AI effectively at the University means:

Applying human judgement to review and validate AI-generated outputs.
Protecting personal, sensitive and confidential information.
Being transparent when AI has been used to support work.
Using AI to enhance, not replace, expertise and critical thinking.
Following University policies, guidance and best practice.

AI is a layer across all Digital Capabilities, and you can find specific information aligned to each capability. As an institution, our institutional standard tool is Microsoft Copilot, which is available for all colleagues and students. Other tools are available to use.

Copilot SharePoint: This SharePoint site provides the latest information relating to the rollout of Copilot as well also numerous bitesize and webinar videos so you can enhance your practice.
Copilot for Colleagues course: This introduction to Copilot course provides useful, structured learning content so you can get started with Copilot
AI Teaching & Learning Needs Hub: This SharePoint site provides useful guidance on how to embed AI into Teaching & Learning. The site features case studies which users can use view and learn from. Users can also share their own case studies so together we can enhance T&L practice across the University.
Copilot Viva Engage Community: Learn from colleagues, ask questions and share experiences through the UoM M365 Copilot Viva Engage Community, helping you develop confidence and capability in using AI.
