Manchester Institute of Education

Manchester Institute of Education (MIE) runs a wide range of programmes including PGCE, undergrad and postgrad programmes for UK and overseas students, and programmes for the continuing professional development of teachers and other professionals.

MIE builds upon a long-standing reputation for excellence in educational research and teaching with a tradition stretching back to 1890, when education was first established as a focus for study within the University. Indeed, when established in 1914, the Manchester Faculty of Education was the first such body in the UK.

MIE is one of the top 10 Education Departments in the UK (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025). In the UK University Funding Councils’ (UKRI’s) most recent research assessment exercise (REF2021), the Institute also achieved a very high ranking and grade point average, in recognition of the high quality of its research publications, the impact of its research, and its research environment. In the spirit of Ellen Wilkinson, and after whom the building MIE is based is named, MIE continues the tradition of promoting critical thinking and equity in education and beyond.
