How to select outputs

Which outputs should I request for review?

Please select all your outputs, published since 1 January 2021 which you believe are likely to be judged world-leading (4*), according to the REF2021 assessment criteria below:

  • 4* - Quality that is world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour.

You do not need to re-request review of outputs previously put forward for review - these will be picked up in forthcoming review cycles.

If you have no new 4* outputs to put forward this year, please confirm by completing this short Microsoft Form, to demonstrate engagement with this RRE.

If you need help in choosing outputs for the RRE, please contact your Head of Department or Research Co-ordinator in the first instance.

Is there a minimum/maximum limit on the number of outputs?

No, we are asking you to select ALL outputs that you think are of 4* quality.

It is recognized that some staff may have no 4* outputs to propose at this stage in the REF cycle in which case, you should simply confirm by completing this short Microsoft Form, to demonstrate engagement with this RRE.

How to request outputs for review through Pure

Before you start, please:

  • Check your Pure profile is up to date and any outputs you wish to propose are available via Pure, our institutional repository (guidance here on adding content to Pure).
  • Make sure you have an ORCID and that this is linked to your Pure profile.
  • Check your publications meet OA requirements (this excludes long form outputs such as monographs, book chapters, trade books).

Log into Pure and follow the step-by-step guidance provided in the FHums Guidance Document. There is also a short video on how to select outputs for review.

Remember to submit review at the end of the process.

Information to add to Review request message box

In a change from previous exercises, please only complete this section to provide additional information on the output, as would be required for a REF Panel. This includes:

A 300-word ‘additional statement’ where:

  • The role of the researcher or the research process is not evident in the submitted output;
  • The output is an edited book, anthology, or special journal issue where the author has made a demonstrable contribution to the research published (in addition to any chapter published in the same work) to clarify the nature of the individual’s research contribution.

or

A 100-word abstract for research outputs in languages other than English, to describe the content and nature of the work.
