Social Responsibility in the Curriculum – applications now open for 2026/27
The Faculty of Humanities welcomes applications for our Social Responsibility in the Curriculum Fund. Any course unit leader or programme director of an undergraduate or postgraduate taught course can submit a proposal. We will accept repeat applications, but modules can receive funding for a maximum of 2 iterations, as colleagues will need to work to embed the interventions into modules going forward. In all cases the proposal must be for the enhancement of an existing module or programme or the incorporation of explicit social responsibility emphasis in a new module.
The aim is for students to be encouraged to think how their enthusiasm for their subject can communicate, connect or be relevant beyond the immediate demands of their course. The maximum award that can be applied for is £1,000 per module, although colleagues may ask for additional funds (up to £3,000) if the activity involves multiple modules from the same programme or engages students across multiple programmes.

Examples of previously funded projects
- Professor Claire McGourlay, SOSS: Claire used the funding to bring guest speakers onto campus to speak at Law student lectures on the topic of the Post Office Scandal and miscarriages of justice. See article: Law students gain insight from wrongfully convicted sub-postmasters
- Dr Jack Webb, SALC: Jack brought his module ‘Black Britain: Power, Neighbourhoods and the Everyday’ to life by taking the students on a Black History walk in the L8 (Toxteth) area of Liverpool. This was in collaboration with Liverpool Black History Walks.
- Dr Meghan Rose Donnelly, SOSS: Megan took students on the module ‘The Anthropology of Kinship, Gender, and Sex’ to two different theatre productions linked to the topic. These included interviews with the performers, and the students wrote a reflective piece on the experience.
- Dr Francisca Álvarez-Figueroa, AMBS: This project invited a multi-award winner speaker, coach, and founder of the NGO “She leads for legacy”, to deliver a Masterclass reflecting on inclusive leadership and the challenges that minorities face. This was part of a Human Resources module. The funding covered speaker fees and expenses as well as the recording of an interview.
- Dr Alison Browne, SEED: Alison ‘s project was in response to Geography undergraduates requesting that they need, and want, decolonising, anti-colonial and Indigenous curriculum throughout their degree programme. Alison collaborated with Nowanup Bush University (south west Australia) to develop virtual fieldclasses to Nowanup, and a range of cultural repatriation and exchange projects), and this funding enabled resources to be developed so students can revisit Nowanup as a virtual fieldtrip throughout their whole degree programme.
