Getting ready for the launch of Canvas
02 Sep 2025
Key actions for academic colleagues ahead of Semester 1.
To ensure that all Semester 1 and relevant full-year course content is fully built and published in time for the new semester, please take note of the following key things you need to do and the support available.
Build your courses
With the start of Semester 1 on Monday 29 September fast approaching, it is essential that you build and publish your courses in Canvas. Most course data from Blackboard has been migrated to Canvas apart from a small number of courses where work continues.
Many colleagues who have been building their courses have said that it can take longer than expected, so please do not leave this until the last minute. Guidance on building courses to the course unit Canvas standards is available on StaffNet, and a full schedule of training sessions is running throughout September.
Publish your courses
We need make sure that courses due to start teaching at the beginning of the academic year are built and published by Monday, 8 September.
It is a quick but critical step for you to ensure that courses are available and accessible on Canvas ahead of students engaging with their course materials from day one. Once a course is published, students will be able to view it but you can continue to improve and add to course content.

Canvas Confidence days
If you want to deepen your understanding of Canvas, have any questions or would like to speak to colleagues who have already begun using the platform, you can join the Faculty eLearning team for a three-day series of in-person drop-ins, training sessions, workshops and panel discussions.
Experienced eLearning staff will be on hand to offer guidance and support as we head into Semester 1. There is no need to register for any of the sessions – simply turn up and get involved.
The days run from Tuesday 9 to Thursday 11 September, 10am to 4pm in the Booth Street East Building (26 on the campus map).
Ongoing support and training
We continue to offer a wide range of support on the Faculty’s Adopting Canvas SharePoint site to help you with the move to Canvas, including training materials and expert advice from our eLearning team.
If you have any questions or need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the eLearning team. And remember that Blackboard switches off on Friday, 17 October.
