Visitors

To maintain our global role and provide an effective environment for our academic community, the University implements checks in accordance with export control regulations to enable these activities to continue safely. These checks are made on the entities linked to the visitors, and not on the visitors themselves.

Please note: when planning to sponsor or invite a visitor physically to the University or to grant their remote access, export controls checks must be made and approved before submitting the People & OD visitor request or remote access form. Do not extend an invitation until both export and People & OD checks have been cleared.

In addition, international researchers who are subject to UK immigration control (apart from exempt nationalities), who coming to the UK as a visitor will need to apply under Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) before they begin any research subject to ATAS. If the research focus is changed at any time a new ATAS certificate will be required. ATAS certificates are institution specific so if a visitor is being hosted by multiple universities a certificate per university will be needed if their research is subject to ATAS, regardless of the length of their visit. Holding a valid visa does not ensure ATAS clearance for the work being undertaken.

If you are planning to host a visitor who requires ATAS approval, please ensure they are aware of the changes and enough time is allowed to apply for and obtain a certificate in advance of their arrival.  Further information on ATAS Scheme and who can help you at UoM can be found at:
