Scholarship Network -
UoM Teaching and Scholarship Network
If you are interested in developing your teaching and scholarship practice and connecting with like-minded colleagues across the University of Manchester this network is for you.
Around a quarter of our colleagues are teaching and scholarship and we want to create a space for all those interested in developing teaching and scholarship to belong in a UoM Teaching and Scholarship Network.
This will be led by Hannah Cobb and Jenni Rose as well as a steering group from across the university including Eleanor Aspey, Helen Baxter, Elaine Clark, Duncan Hull, Karen Lander, Jen McBride, Rachel Parker-Strak, Thomas Rodgers Reimala Sivalingam, Rachel Studd, Lisa Taylor and Nick Weise.
We aim to foster a supportive community, and offer space to share challenges. Join us for a range of events (both in-person and online), connect with fellow educators through our dedicated email list, and contribute to shaping the future of teaching excellence at UoM. Whether you're a teaching and scholarship expert or just starting out our the Teaching and Scholarship Network welcomes you.

Thursday 2nd October, 12:00-13:00 |
Jackie Carter is a Professor at UoM, known for her trailblazing work in statistical literacy, experiential learning, and inclusive education. She is a passionate advocate for widening participation, disability inclusion, and alternative academic pathways. Jackie has received multiple awards, including a National Teaching Fellowship, the Everywoman in Technology Academic Award, and recognition as one of the UK’s Top 100 Disability Leaders. She is coming to talk to us about her co-authored book with Linda Baines called Practitioner, Professor, Researcher, Reformer. They share the stories of 30 women who have taken atypical routes into and through academia. These women—teachers, professionals, researchers, and reformers—challenge the idea of a “proper academic” and show how diverse experiences enrich higher education. Organised around four career themes—Getting In, Getting On, Getting Out, and Getting By—the book explores systemic barriers, personal strategies, and the power of torchbearers and positive disruptors. It’s a call to rethink academic norms and embrace inclusive, real-world impact. The webinar on Thursday will certainly give some food for thought and there will be plenty of time for your questions! |

Designing scholarship for impact using human centred design with Sarah Dyer |
9th December 11:00-13:30 Face to Face |
In February 2025 Duncan Iverson challenged the TaSN to think about how scholarship can create more impact across the University of Manchester. Our challenge for this workshop to explore how scholarship can both create value for the institution and be seen to create that value through persona and empathy mapping. By actively engaging in creating fictional personas and mapping out thoughts, feelings and sayings you can learn to share your experience of scholarship effectively and highlight the impact of your scholarship for reward and recognition, ensuring your voice directly influences positive change within the University. Also it’s a BYGOF workshop! We will be using human centred design approaches in the workshop. We will also provide guidance on how you might use similar approaches in your education practice, either with students or working with colleagues. |
