MB ChB Community Team- Becoming a Doctor Team (Team Leader: Sarah Sharp) (School of Medical Sciences) for Inclusive education and Flexible learning and digital delivery

The MB ChB Community Team is a close collaborative team of academics and PS staff. This nomination came from Enam Haque for the team’s work on “Becoming a Doctor” - a four-strand menu of learning experiences for Year 1 & 2 medical students on the MBChB programme (the ‘medical degree’ that trains doctors) that has evolved and grown since 2018.  Rooted in a commitment to authentic early clinical and community experience, the team has built a rich menu of placements and teaching, which is innovative and socially responsible. The four aligned components of the menu include

• community health placements
• multidisciplinary team (MDT) placements
• secondary school PSHE teaching
• smart-glass aided clinical consultations.

Far from a single intervention, this is a coherent curriculum ecosystem that has grown in scale and ambition across successive academic years. Each placement has grown from pilot to roll out without loss of quality, sustaining high student ratings. 

The Becoming a Doctor team prides itself on capturing the student voice, and students have been integral to development of the work. They have also built links with the wider community, such as schools, charities and community providers, to deliver co-created opportunities which benefit the Manchester community. The collaborative team approach serves as a model to colleagues in FBMH on how to effectively achieve the Manchester 2035 objectives of civic engagement and collaboration.
