The Compensation and Condonement Working Group was nominated by Freddie Gent (Teaching and Learning Manager (SoNS & SoE) for their hard work providing educational leadership across seven departments and nine discipline Boards of Examiners to ensure a successful and consistent application of the Engineering Council's new Compensation & Condonement Policy. This nomination represented a powerful partnership between academic and Professional Services staff, united by a shared commitment to student success, wellbeing and employability.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering’s Compensation and Condonement Working Group transformed a complex accreditation requirement into a coordinated, student-centred approach across engineering disciplines. The team created clear examination-board flow charts, consistent guidance and accessible information for staff and students which gave hundreds of students additional opportunities to meet Engineering Council requirements: in 2025 alone, 578 students were offered 933 resit or resubmission attempts specifically to help them retain the benefits of an accredited degree.

Alongside consistent decision-making across two Schools, team members provided expert support through Student Support Hubs, a dedicated webinar, handbook guidance and online FAQs, helping students understand their options at a potentially stressful point in their studies. By combining educational leadership with a practical pedagogy of care, the group has established an influential model for collaborative, transparent and inclusive student support across the University.
