The MB ChB Community Team is a close collaborative team of academics and PS staff. This Commendation acknowledges the group teaching activities this team delivers across all years of the MB ChB Programme, including
- early clinical debrief in year 1 & 2
- clinical debrief in year 3
- clinical debrief within themed case discussion teaching in year 4
- advanced clinical debrief in year 5
The teaching provides opportunities for clinical supervision, supports the students and provides opportunity for professional identity formation, as well as an opportunity to think like a doctor, through application of clinical reasoning pedagogy.
The planning and organisation required to make this work is considerable: the team works closely to ensure effective delivery of small group teaching, including clinical debrief in different parts of the MB ChB. PS staff ensure all the different teaching is coordinated and arranged well, and are very responsive to students, clinical tutors and academic staff. There are clear standard operating procedures in place, to deal with situations such as sick tutors, student concerns or logistical challenges.
The team is proud of how it supports its tutors. All tutors are part of a “buddy group”, a group of tutors supported by an academic member of staff. The buddy group provides a safe space for tutors to ask questions and support each other, through peer review and discussion. Each academic lead for a buddy group also provides opportunities for tutor development, through tutor observations and reviewing student evaluation reports. There is an annual Clinical Debrief Tutor Training Day, which enables tutors to network with each other and attend bespoke workshops and lectures, for their professional development. The collegiate approach has resulted in several of the group tutors wishing to join the academic team, and they have felt supported in successfully applying to academic roles within the team.
