Marco Gersabeck (Reader, School of Natural Sciences)

Marco’s submission detailed how he has created an interesting and impactful lab experiment for undergraduate students.

Marco to helped create a lab experiment based on the analysis of data from the Large Hadron Collider. Since taking over the delivery of the experiment in 2017-18, Marco has worked in partnership with students and used their feedback to make improvements. One such improvement was removing particle physics specific software during the data analysis and replacing it with data science technologies that would give the students the most transferable skills. Marco’s submission also showed how he scaled up the delivery of this lab during the COVID-19 pandemic by recruiting more demonstrators and providing them with detailed notes, a worked solution and rubric translated to specific outcomes to keep consistency in teaching and assessment. This lab has inspired students’ interest in this area of research, with oversubscription for summer internships.
