The Genetic Counselling Team, Led by Rhona MacLeod – (Evolution Infection and Genomic Science Division, Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health)

The staff working under Rhona MacLeod within the Genomic Counselling STP Programme have successfully adapted a complex and interactive face to face teaching unit, into an effective and forward thinking online module.

Despite all being on 0.2-0.3 FTE contracts and spending the rest of their time in mental health support for Covid-19 care workers, they created an innovative online module that was extremely well received by its students. The counselling skills that have been taught throughout this module will have a long and lasting impact on the STP students it caters to in their professional practice, in part due to its introducing new concepts relating to inclusivity and sensitivity in patient interactions; in particular, the ability to provide information to patients in such a way that accounts for and manages their private and context driven emotions around diagnosis. Through effective organisation and community minded activity, Rhona’s team came together to produce an excellent online teaching unit.
