Application process

A Teaching Assistant (TA) is a person employed to provide teaching and learning support to academic staff. TAs can be employed on either an hourly contract or through a studentship and are normally PGR students from the University of Manchester, although PGR students from other institutions and others employed to teach on an hourly basis are also able to work as TAs at Manchester.

The role of a Teaching Assistant

The Faculty of Humanities Teaching Assistant Policy determines that Schools will recruit and appoint annually to maintain a pool of approved TAs to be drawn upon for teaching.

All Teaching Assistants will have a minimum set of expectations they will be required to fulfil, these will be clearly detailed in the Letter of Intent but in brief will consist of preparation time, tutorial/seminar teaching, assessment and marking, lecture attendance and any required out of class student contact or administration.

Each School, although able to determine its own requirements in regards to the TA’s job role, will be required to follow the both the Humanities Recruitment Schedule and the People Directorate Process in order to ensure that training and induction are completed in a common and timely manner.

Information as to the recruitment process and schedules can be found on Staffnet.

More information on the role of the TA can be found on the People Directorate web pages.
