UKRI studentships

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) brings together Arts and Humanities Research Council; Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council; Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council; Economic and Social Research Council; Innovate UK; Medical Research Council; Natural Environment Research Council; Research England; and Science and Technology Facilities Council.

In Faculty of Humanities, doctoral training funding comes mainly from AHRC, ESRC and EPSRC.

Further information

For further information on postgraduate research funding, including doctoral loan, please see:

Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funding

ESRC-funded students must be aware that information about their studentship will be published in the UKRI's Gateway to Research system including their names, project title and project summary.

Additional funding for ESRC NWDTC and NWSSDTP-funded students

The University of Manchester is part of the ESRC North West Doctoral Training Centre (NWDTC) and North West Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (NWSSDTP). Students holding a NWDTC or NWSSDTP studentship may be eligible for additional funding such as research training support grant (RTSG), overseas fieldwork allowance, overseas institutional visit and internship. Please see appropriate website for more information.

Studentship competition

For first year PhD students who wish to apply for ESRC North West Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (NWSSDTP) studentship for their second and third years of PhD, please see NWSSDTP website for information about eligibility criteria and application process and deadline.

Engineering and Physical Science Research Council and other funding

On a competitive basis, the Faculty offer a small number of EPSRC DTP studentships each year to students registered in the Faculty of Humanities who carry out research that comes under EPSRC’s remit.

The awards include research training support grant (RTSG) which can be used to fund research related activities such as research training, fieldwork, conference attendance, purchase of equipment or materials. EPSRC DTP-funded students in the Faculty of Humanities should contact hums.doctoralacademy@manchester.ac.uk for advice regarding RTSG.

CASE doctoral studentships

Collaborative doctoral studentships

The Faculty of Humanities has a long history of working collaboratively with non-HEI partners. In many cases, our partnerships have led to the creation of collaborative doctoral studentships and vice versa.

Other than the UKRI driving for greater cross-sector collaboration, there are many benefits that collaborative doctoral studentships bring such as the co-creation of knowledge, the co-funding of postgraduate research studentships, the strengthening of the partner relationship and the opportunity to create and disseminate impactful research output.

Types of collaborative doctoral studentships in Humanities

ESRC CASE studentships

The University of Manchester is part of ESRC North West DTC (NWDTC) and North West Social Science DTP (NWSSDTP). There is an annual NWSSDTP CASE Studentship Competition, which gives academics in partnership with external organisations the opportunity to apply for funding for collaborative doctoral projects. ESRC CASE studentships for our institution are funded by the NWSSDTP and cover home fees and RCUK level maintenance for eligible applicants. Further information and guidance can be found on the NWSSDTP website.

Also, the Faculty provides support for NWSSDTP CASE applications via the Humanities Strategic Investment Fund (HSIF) support. Calls for proposals are made around April each year.

AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Awards (CDAs)

The University of Manchester is the lead institution in the North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership (NWCDTP). The DTP is committed to engaging with non-HEI organisations to promote academic collaboration and innovative training opportunities for its highly talented PhD students.

The CDA Scheme offers a non-HEI organization from the private, public or third sectors the opportunity to develop a bespoke, three-year project with an academic at one of the NWCDTP’s Higher Education institutions. A doctoral student will then be recruited to research the project. Further information can be found on the NWCDTP website

EPSRC DTP CASE and iCASE studentships

The Faculty EPSRC studentship funding mainly comes from the EPSRC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) allocation. Studentships allocated from this route can be converted into CASE studentships subject to agreement with non-HEI partners and cash contribution. Please see the EPSRC website for additional information.

In addition, EPSRC allocates further awards directly to businesses. These are called iCASE. The businesses then define the research projects and choose academic partners. More information can be found on the EPSRC iCASE website.

Projects should be in the area of engineering and the physical sciences (this does not exclude Humanities, eg research questions related to engineering management are funded).

Guideline

For PGR supervisors who are interested in establishing collaboration involving PGR studentships looking to find out how to go about securing funding, you might find the Faculty of Humanities CASE (collaborative) PGR studentships guide below useful. The guide answers many commonly asked questions about how CASE studentships are arranged, funding bodies' and non-HEI partners' requirements and a quick how-to.
