Data
The Directorate of EDI supports the University to achieve its goals by monitoring and reporting on staff and student equality data.
As the University grows, demand for data and analysis remains high, highlighting both the importance of evidence-based decisions and limited analytical resources. To align with our strategy From Manchester, for the world and advance Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, we must prioritise requests clearly and transparently, focusing on activities with the greatest impact and maintaining good data governance.
Data is presented in an annual publication that provides EDI information for the University.
- The University of Manchester Equality Information Report 2026
- The University of Manchester Equality Information Report 2025 - The recruitment figures have been revised to group core Academic, Researcher, and Professional Services (PS) colleagues accurately.

It is also included in the social inclusion dashboard. This illustrates how the University compares to other institutions in terms of representation of staff who are BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) and disabled as well as mature and widening participation students.
Pay Gap Reports
We are required by law to produce a gender pay gap report but as with gender, it is important for us to report on ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, and religion as well, to show our commitment to progress equality, diversity and inclusion, and to drive changes within our University. This is the first time we are reporting on sexual orientation and religion.

Pay Complexity and Limitations
EDI data is drawn from multiple administrative systems across the University, meaning that producing meaningful insights often requires significant data integration, transformation, and manual validation. This includes combining datasets with various structures, applying standard definitions, cleaning data, and resolving discrepancies. While the EDI team takes all reasonable steps to minimise errors through thorough quality assurance and validation processes, the complexity of these systems and the level of manual processing involved mean that errors can occasionally occur and should be considered when setting expectations around data accuracy, timelines, and resources.
To align with data protection legislation (GDPR) we might not be able to provide all the data you require if the numbers could identify individuals and/or we might have to apply techniques such as rounding/hiding small numbers to ensure anonymity.
How do we collect your data?
EDI data is collected via the employee self-service tool MyView, for staff, and My Manchester, for students. All information provided is confidential and not used in any other way.
Why do we analyse your data?
Data analysis directs and supports the work of the Directorate by monitoring progress against our EDI strategy.
Your data is analysed to monitor and review the effectiveness of some of our services, policies and processes that support staff and students
How do we use your data?
We use staff and student data about disability, gender, race, religion or belief and sexual orientation to help us to produce anonymous statistical reports such as the University Equality Information report and the Social Inclusion dashboard.
These inform our Annual Performance Review (APR) process which allows us to direct resources and monitor activities. The APR process also helps set equality-related key performance indicators for faculties and Professional services.
We also use this information to direct work around our EDI strategy and applications to charter marks such as Athena Swan, Race Equality Charter, Stonewall and the Disability Standard.

Requestors are encouraged to engage early and provide clear requirements to support accurate and efficient data delivery, hence please submit all requests at least 4 weeks before your deadline.
Please note that requests are prioritised based on a combination of legal obligation, impact, and urgency - not solely on deadlines.
