Communications
The Communications team ensures our University talks clearly and directly to its stakeholders and ambassadors – our staff and students, local and national leaders, our peers and collaborators in the sector and industry, and the media. We provide advice on a range of communications matters and are here to help you.
Student communications
The Student Communications team work to keep our current students informed, engaged and supported throughout their student journey. We deliver messages through a range of channels including thematic email newsletters, social media and the core Student News Hub. We work in partnership with the Student's Union and with wider University teams to provide communications advice and support, and deliver key campaigns throughout the year such as Welcome and Graduation.
Staff communications
We help make our colleagues – our greatest asset and essential ambassadors – feel involved, engaged and valued. We deliver messages on behalf of management, facilitate a two-way dialogue between leaders and staff and develop colleagues’ communication skills using a variety of channels, as well as looking after engagement events for the University Executive Team and Professional Services Leadership Team.
Change communications
Change Communications is a team of communications and engagement professionals, who work across the portfolio of change projects managed by the University's Strategic Change Office (SCO). We are within the Directorate of Communications, Marketing and Student Recruitment. Our ‘comms leads’ work with programme and project teams to design, develop and deliver communications and engagement activities across the life of your programme or project with an 'audience first' approach.
Research communications
We communicate the impact and excellence of our research to our key audiences to demonstrate the benefits of our research to society, enhancing our reputation as a globally influential university. Bringing together communications and research teams, we coordinate communications support for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) submission, including training and copyediting the University’s submission. We are also developing a strategy to showcase our research impact locally, nationally and internationally.
Teaching and learning communications
We have a dedicated Teaching and Learning Communications and Marketing Manager who works with colleagues across the TLSE spectrum to amplify key student messaging to relevant staff and to promote our teaching excellence both internally across the University and externally, including coordinating communications for the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) assessment. Showcasing Manchester as the ‘place to be’ to global teaching colleagues, elevating our presence with relevant governing bodies and, platforming our teaching and learning successes.

Media relations
The News and Media Relations team works to promote world-leading research news alongside the excellent work of our staff and students externally via the media, whilst also protecting and enhancing the reputation of our University. We can provide proactive and reactive media support, media training and promote your work through various external-facing platforms, including media releases, social media, our online newsroom, and The Conversation.
Social media
The social media team manage the strategy and development of corporate University channels on X, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn, with a combined audience of over 1 million followers/fans. We produce paid-for and organic content and campaigns related to research, student experience and key events to boost the University's brand and reputation and support student recruitment objectives. We also manage social media enquiries from prospective and current students, and provide best practice support and training to practitioners across the University using social media channels.
