Gareth Henshall (School of Engineering)

Gareth’s Teaching Excellence Award submission highlighted his development of a flexible, interactive workshop model that enhances student engagement, confidence, and learning in programming. Initially piloted with Computer Science students, the model was expanded to UCIL22212, a course Gareth designed for non-computing students across disciplines like Humanities, Law, and Education. Combining live coding, hands-on tasks, and anonymous Q&A, the workshops foster psychological safety and active learning. Students report increased confidence and enjoyment, with data showing improved outcomes—those attending regularly performed up to 10% better. Designed for scalability, the approach offers a replicable, inclusive model for delivering technical and conceptual skills across diverse subject areas.
