Funding opportunities

The RS team regularly advertise and target funding opportunities to relevant colleagues across the School. You can find out more about these opportunities via e-mails sent to the Social Sciences staff listserv, information on funding opportunities on the Faculty intranet and by setting up personalised funding alerts.

The Strategic Funding team provide advice and support on both funding opportunities and grant facilitating.

Funding calls

  • You are encouraged to contact your RS team to seek advice about the most appropriate funding opportunities available to support your research plans.
  • Information on funding opportunities is available and regularly updated in the Research Funding Opportunities section of the Faculty intranet.
  • You can also create personalised funding email alerts and find further information using the University’s institutional subscription to Research Professional, which can be accessed on-campus without a login, or off-campus can be accessed by registering with the website using an “@manchester.ac.uk” email address.

Grant Facilitator Advice and Support:

  • Funding Workshops & information events – dates to be confirmed – will be organised and facilitated by the Strategic Funding team giving you the opportunity and support to work on developing your own proposal.
  • Grant Facilitator support is available to work with academics on large, strategic grants and to support early career researchers. The grant facilitator will work alongside the RSO team in co-ordinating the application preparation process. If you think your proposal would benefit from Grant Facilitator support please complete the Request for Grant Writer Support and return it to the Research Support Manager.
  • Contact: Paula.Dalzell@manchester.ac.uk for more information

Preparing your proposal

Please contact your Research Support Office as soon as you have an idea for a research grant proposal. The team can help you to identify suitable funders, help with registering for and using online application systems, checking eligibility, preparing the budget, checking the application and providing institutional approval for the submission.

  • All applications require approval and sign-off, so timelines for this need to be factored into the submission preparation.
  • All applications will require approval at School Level, with Head of School sign-off after consultation with the Head of your unit (ie Discipline area, Division or Institute).

Please note:

  • Faculty Level approval is required if the application is over £1 million in value: the application must also be approved by the Faculty Research Office and theDeputy Dean (Research) and by the Head of Faculty Finance
  • University Level approval is required if the application is over £5 million in value: the application must also be approved by the Vice-President for Research following Faculty and School approval.
  • Some individual schemes require approval at different levels regardless of value (eg European Research Council applications), and the RSS team will advise you if this applies for the application you are preparing and will provide the requisite advice and support throughout the process.
