Office hours
Office hours are intended to give students an opportunity to discuss any intellectual or academic issue arising from a course they take. They provide an excellent opportunity for students to have face-to-face contact with an academic member of staff in an unintimidating non-group setting. Examples of topics raised might include selecting an essay topic, giving advice on readings, formulating revision strategies, problem-solving or, more generally, addressing an intellectual problem that a student may have felt inhibited talking about at a tutorial. It should be impressed on students that office hours are an important academic resource.
All academic members of staff are expected to offer two office hours during term timetable. The organisation of office hours (mix of SOHOL and drop-in) varies from discipline area to discipline area. These are the current policies of each DA: Economics, Philosophy, Politics, Social Anthropology, Sociology
Quality assurance
The Faculty of Humanities Teaching and Learning Office provide guidance and templates for new course units.
All course units and new programmes have to be approved by the Head of Department and the School Teaching and Learning Committee prior to going to the Faculty Teaching and Learning Committee for approval. The Faculty Teaching and Learning Office are happy to advise on completion of the paperwork and to discuss ideas at the development stage.

Procedure for obtaining approval for new course unit
- A course unit request approval/amendment form needs to be completed to request approval for a new course unit or an amendment to an existing one (including a unit you are reviving). The form requires you to show that the unit has received approval by the department level relevant Programme Committee and by the Head of Department (to confirm resourcing implications are considered and agreed).
- You can get this form from the UG/PG office and you submit the form for approval to the STLC regulations sub-group.
- The request for these goes out from the STLC in January of each year
- The deadline for submitting forms for the following academic year is early.
- Once approved you will be informed and given the course unit code.
Faculty of Humanities Policy re the Use of Level 6 Units at Level 7.
The University provides notes for guidance for the completion of the template. Many of the elements are similar to those in programme specifications, e.g. aims, syllabus and learning and teaching methods. It is important that the intended learning outcomes specified for a unit contribute to those for the programme as a whole and are appropriate for the level or stage of the programme at which the unit is expected to be taken. You may also find the University Guidance for Assessed Student Group Working helpful. (For further guidance see the appropriate sections within the Manual of Academic Procedures).
