ESRC Festival of Social Sciences 2023

The aim of the 2023 ESRC Festival of Social Sciences is to showcase Manchester’s social science research to a broad non-academic audience. This year the theme of the Festival is Lifelong Wellbeing.

ESRC have advised that the theme can be broadly interpreted broadly. If you have a brilliant idea for an event not linked to the theme that is fine (25% of the festival offering must be dedicated to the theme).

Call for applications will open on Monday, 15 May - we welcome pre-application discussions with the Festival Administrators, Carly Chadwick and Leanne Munroe at hums_impact@manchester.ac.uk.

Festival dates: Saturday 21 October – Friday 17 November 2023 - you are welcome to hold your event at any time within this period, however please note that if we have many applications for the same date/time, you may be asked to alter your proposed date/time to prevent events clashing.

Funding decisions prioritise engagement with groups outside of academia (e.g. children, young people, third sector organisations, the general public. Businesses, local government and policy makers will also be considered). Applications for interdisciplinary events are strongly encouraged. We particularly welcome applications from early career researchers, including PhD students.

PhD student applicants must name as a co-applicant on the application form a member of staff who has agreed to provide advice and assistance where necessary, and to take formal responsibility for the event (including managing the finances, any health and safety requirements, etc.). The co-applicant may, but need not, be your supervisor.

For inspiration and ideas for the kind of event you might run, you can find out about the 2022 events via a short video.
