SoSS policy regarding PhD external examiners' expenses
PhD external examiners - The upper limit for external examiners’ expenses is £500. Expense claims that exceed this limit need to be paid by the School/Subject Area. On rare occasions, external examiners' expenses do exceed this limit. This normally happens when an external is appointed from abroad. If you appoint an external whose expenses exceed £500 the School will pay the extra on ONE occasion in each academic year for each subject area. In all other instances, the extra expenses will need to be paid from Departmental funds.
SoSS Policy on the appointment of External Supervisors for PhD Students
In exceptional cases, the School will agree to the appointment of an external supervisor for a student already registered on a PhD programme. In these cases, the external examiner is paid a fee. The external cannot make any claim for any other expenses incurred with the supervision, visits to Manchester etc as they expected to pay these from the fee they receive. Here is the form that departments must complete to request consideration of the appointment. The appointment is approved by the School PGR Director and the Head of School.
