Get to know the Digital and Flexible Learning segment

01 Feb 2024

Did you know that the Digital and Flexible Learning segment is involved in a variety of initiatives?

These range from supporting the transition to the next Central Learning Environment (CLE) to creating networks for colleagues to share technical expertise and ideas.

Co-led by Niels Walet (Professor of Theoretical Physics and Associate Dean for Digital and Flexible Learning) and Dan Jagger (Faculty eLearning Manager), the segment leadership team also currently consist of Akilu Yunusa-Kaltungo and Rob Appleby (Schools Heads of Education) and Carly Peesapati and Steve Olivier (School Heads of Teaching, Learning and Student Experience).

Since 2020, there has been a significant shift to digital and flexible learning and the Faculty and University has implemented a range of products and support to help our colleagues provide the best possible online experience for our students. Having recently created their working five-year strategy, the segment leadership team will be engaging people from across the Faculty to deliver their priority areas. These include:

  • Measuring and improving the quality and consistency of flexible learning course delivery
  • Ensuring that the Faculty is engaged in the selection of the next CLE product(s) and supporting the transition to the new CLE with high quality materials and resources
  • Supporting pilots (Flexible Learning Programme and others) to identify new technologies and ways of working across the Faculty
  • Ensuring that digital technology is used to support teaching and assessment
  • Developing initiatives to support the embedding of digital skills across programmes
  • Creating support networks for staff to share technical expertise and ideas
  • Identifying areas where online courses can enhance the offering of the Faculty and add strategic value
  • Investigating how Flexible Learning Programme initiatives such as ‘Flexible by Design’ can be incorporated into the Faculty programme approval/renewal process
