Registers
The University of Manchester maintains the following registers:
Central registers for all University Capital Assets
Purpose:
- To ensure all capital assets are accurately recorded and maintained
- To provide a reference point to check all assets held within the University
- To enable equipment asset sharing within UoM and outside of the UoM (i.e. N8 Bodies)
- To provide contact details for all assets for both asset sharing and for asset verification
The registers are updated monthly by the Central Capital Team. The information is obtained from the Capital Information form, and Capital & Research Equipment form, together with signed business cases, that should be attached to the requisition.
Central & Faculties Inventory Register for all Equipment between £50k to £100k

Purpose:
- To ensure all assets are accurately recorded and maintained as per the University Financial regulations and procedures.
- To comply with requirements on equipment sharing through the provision of a central reference point to check all assets held within the University. As part of the efficiency agenda equipment sharing is expected wherever possible both within and outside of UoM.
- To provide contact details for all assets for both asset sharing and asset verification
The register is updated monthly by Capital leads in the faculties and co-ordinated by the Central Capital team.
Asset Sharing Register
It is a requirement of the Research Councils and an expectation of all funders that all necessary checks have been have been carried out to ensure that we do not submit bids for new equipment where this equipment can already be accessed from existing provision. This could be either within the University of at other HEIs.
To enable this we have set up a sharing register as part of the N8 Universities group. Please ask your HoFFRA if you are unsure of how to find this in your area
The N8 database is a fully searchable online database which can be used to locate and request access to research equipment and facilities across the N8 university partnership.
Equipment.data is an EPSRC funded resource developed in response to the need to improve visibility and utilisation of UK research equipment. It is an RCUK requirement that all equipment over OJEU should be visible on the equipment.data.
